Real Talk with Rachael Podcast

Sep 23, 2020

This week on Real Talk with Rachael, we’re talking with Dr. Deb Gorton about her new book “Embracing Uncomfortable: Facing Our Fears While Pursuing Our Purpose”. Dr. Deb Gorton (B.A. Arizona State University; M.A., Ph.D. Fuller Theological Seminary) is the Gary Chapman Chair of Marriage, Family Ministry, and Therapy at Moody Theological Seminary and Graduate School. For more than fourteen years Deb has worked as a change agent for individuals, organizations, and emerging leaders, helping them refine, embrace, and thrive in their purpose. Built on the foundation of relationship, her core philosophy is that collaboration in community produces radical transformation. Deb resides in Chicago and she is also the host of the Becoming Well podcast.

We’re talking about:

  • Where do we really see our identity?
  • Too many people make the failures in their life an identity versus an experience.
  • Taking responsibility for our mistakes doesn’t make it part of our identity, it shows maturity.
  • Comfort is what makes us feel safe and secure in the moment.
  • Embracing uncomfortable is about choosing what to do that aligns with our values rather than what aligns with our comfort in the moment.
  • Our core values are really critical to who we are as a person.
  • Contentment is a discipline in our lives, we can choose to be content.
  • We choose comfort in the moment but the cost is long term discomfort.
  • Comfort is good when it is involved in self stewardship.
  • Sometimes being uncomfortable will inconvenience us.
